‘Daft’ seems to be used to mean ‘insane’ and the ‘hound’ apparently alludes to a stricken sailing ship. The story is, to current sensibilities, pretty much bonkers. Let sleeping dogs lie, said the daft man, when he saw the dead hound before him. There is also the expression lie like a rug which can have the same meanings as lie like a dog. Several centuries later it was used either when saying someone was lazy or when referring to someone as a liar. In December 1822 The London Magazine published a fanciful mariner’s yarn entitled The Second Tale of Allan Lorburne, which included: Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, Hardcover by Erickson, John R. In this example, the phrase let sleeping dogs lie is used to suggest that one should be cautious in letting children know good news before it happens. The expression was used as long ago as the 13001400s, but at that time it was referring to someone being lazy, not telling a lie. To Tilt at Windmills: To Wage a Battle or Take Arms Up Against an Imaginary Enemy or Evil. To get to the current wording of the proverb we have to move to the 19th century. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie: To Let a Matter or Person which is presently at Rest to Stay at Rest (or Asleep) rather than to Create a Disturbance. Sir Robert may have been in the habit of advising caution in political policy but, as far as the evidence shows, he didn’t coin or even use the expression ‘let sleeping dogs lie’. Of course, he may have repeated the form of the proverb printed earlier by Heywood. The expression appears nowhere in any of Walpole’s published writings and, as far as I can tell, there is no record of his ever uttering it. The reason for that attribution is never explained and doesn’t appear to be based on any evidence. It is so closely associated with him as to have been the source of a later cartoon. ‘Let sleeping dogs lie’ is frequently associated with or even attributed to Walpole and the proverb is many times mentioned in print as being his motto. Let sleeping dogs lie derives from the long-standing observation that dogs are often unpredictable when they are suddenly disturbed. At this point I ought to mention the 18th century British politician Sir Robert Walpole.

The lightstrip itself feels very high quality. #PHILIPS HUE SYNC BOX REVIEW TV#In the box you will find the light strip coiled up, the power adapter, and the channels that stick to the back of the TV for routing the light strip. Getting it up and running is pretty straight forward. You won’t be able to sync any external sources like game consoles or streaming boxes this way however, you’ll need the HDMI Sync Box to accomplish that. #PHILIPS HUE SYNC BOX REVIEW WINDOWS#The HDMI Sync Box isn’t a necessity per se, as you can connect this to the Hue Sync app on Windows or Mac, if you happen to use a HTPC as your home media controller. In order to get it up and running you will need a Hue Bridge. Neither of those solutions are going to give us what we want though, and that is color sync’d ambient lighting (yes I know there are 3rd party solutions, but we’re looking at native support here). You can even go down the DIY method with cheap LED strips and a zigbee controller from AliExpress if you just wanted to have gradient colors. This in and of itself isn’t new or revolutionary, competitors like Lifx have had this with their lightstrips, and even their single bulbs for years now. It is specifically designed to go behind your TV – in fact it is sold in terms of screen size, 55”, 65”, 75” – and as the name suggests, it can output color gradients, ie it shows multiple colors on the same lightstrip. The Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip is here to finally address this horrible first world problem that we’ve been having. And even if you spend hundreds more on more lights, you were still being limited to a single color at a time. While I gave the device a generally good review, I did acknowledge that even the least expensive setup would cost you close to $400, and that would only get you two lights, for either side of the TV. Last years HDMI Sync Box release took it up a notch by allowing you to natively synchronize the colors on your TV with your lights (it has to be external input to intercept the signal). The Hue Gradient Lightstrip is part of the “Hue Play” lineup of devices, that are primarily designed to be utilized in the living room area as colorful accent lighting. Almost every enemy you can encounter has some kind of armor, so getting at least some armor penetration should be good.Īrmor fittings depend on what you want to do. If damage is already good, but armor penetration low (axes!), then I use the spiked fitting to enhance armor penetration. I use fittings that enhance damage, IF the weapon has good armor penetration. That is not something that will impress the undead or most monstrous creatures they change your weapon into a club to knock enemies unconscious. Something like Hyperborean Slaver Epic? At low level I was mainly using Armor Reduction Kit to reduce encumbrance. I have tried Thick Armor Plating on another armor without seeing any difference. However I am wondering what fittings I should use on my weapons and armor.
